Tortuguero National Park

Tortuguero National Park

Ubication

Tortuguero National Park is located in the Caribbean coast, in the Limon province of Costa Rica, approximately to 80 kmto the northeast of Limon city

Tortuguero town

Tortuguero town is a small community located in one of the islands or islets between the sea and lagoons of Tortuguero. Actually it has only one street where no cars and where people mobilize on foot or by bicycle. There are some bars, restaurants and souvenir shops but worth visiting this charming Caribbean village to discover the rhythm of life and culture and customs of the area.

Sea Turtles of Tortuguero

Everybody should see a turtle nesting. It is an awesome thing to see, the pilgrimage of a sea creature to land their ancestors left hundreds of millions of years. They begin nesting rituals, to the observer, at least when the turtle leaves the waves. That part is hard to watch, those moments when it appears in the waves and stay there for a while, coming up with a wave and down gently to the sand, while you decide. Blinks and breathes, turns his nose and you push down on the bottom washed by the waves, and then check your environment and even blinks. Take a clear decision. What are your criteria, nobody knows. The turtle is wild and suspicious when barely reaches the shore, even the sound when turned up a match away from the beach will lead back to the sea.

Tortuguero Canals

The journey through the waterway of the lowlands is the most popular channels of Tortuguero (Caribbean), which run along the Atlantic coast north of the port of Moin to the communities of Parismina, Tortuguero and Barra del Colorado. Most travelers head to Tortuguero National Park, which protects an important nesting beach for sea turtles and large tracts of lowland rainforest and wetlands. A trip through any of the extensions of the channels is a real adventure in the jungle, offering the opportunity to see animals such as crocodiles, three-toed sloths, orioles and herons. It also offers world class fishing for tarpon and other species.

LODGINGS

In Tortuguero lodge there are many options, but some of the most important lodgs are:

Turtle Beach Lodge

Turtle beach lodge is a secluded resort spanning 175 acres. It encompasses miles of jungle trails, a meandering private canal and a half mile of isolated beach on the Caribbean Sea. Our lodge provides highly trained staff and guides who ease you into an extraordinary jungle experience. Tortuguero has incredible biological variety due to the existence of eleven different habitats, including rainforest, swamps, beaches and lagoons. The beaches are a key nesting ground for endangered sea turtles, including Hawksbill, Loggerheads, Green and Leatherbacks. Manatees, caiman and crocodiles live in the canals and the jungle is home to endangered jaguars, three species of monkeys (spider, howler, and white-faced Capuchin) and three-toed sloths. Basilisk lizards and tree frogs inhabit the area, along with 375 species of birds. There are more than 400 species of trees and approximately 2,200 species of plants.

Return from your explorations each day and relax on the beach, in a hammock by the pool or perhaps kayak through the canals. Play chess, cards or have a cool drink in our bar rancho and enjoy a leisurely dinner with your fellow travelers. Whether you are seeking adventure, relaxation or a combination of the two, the unique location and diversity of Turtle Beach Lodge provides an unforgettable experience for all.
